Smith College Stoddard Hall
This restoration and renovation project for Stoddard Hall at Smith College included window replacements, masonry restoration, a new whole-building air conditioning system, and accessibility improvements. The project required approvals from many governing bodies including the Elm Street Historic Commission, the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board, and the Smith Campus Planning Committee. One challenge users had in the existing building was the massive double hung windows, which were drafty and difficult to operate. Switching to fixed units over smaller awning windows was enthusiastically embraced by the stakeholders and readily accepted by the Historic Commission.
