Stowe Custom Home
This extremely tight and super-insulated new home fits 1,740 SF into a 770 SF footprint. The simple form and small footprint enabled the homeowners to afford higher-cost features like extra insulation, triple-glazed windows, and a large photovoltaic array. The straightforward building shell, free of jigs and jogs, also made for a relatively easy and effective air-sealing job.
The exterior walls are seventeen inches thick, including double stud walls plus four inches of rigid insulation in two overlapping layers at the exterior, minimizing thermal bridging. Walls this thick make for very deep and inviting window sills, giving the house the solid and massive feel of masonry at a fraction of the cost. The generous southern fenestration brings in plenty of light for a bright and cheery interior.
