As a “peak bagger” and frequent guest of the AMC huts in the White Mountains, I could not resist entering a design competition for a new Lodge in the Maine Wilderness, especially since one of the requirements was to utilize Mass Timber products. FACD invited Regenerative Design and Bensonwood to collaborate on the design and submission. We talked about winter and ice, sun angles, and timber, before sketching showers, bunk houses, and dining rooms! We jazzed up the planar aspects of Mass Timber panels with angular roof and wall planes – reflective of fractals that are found in rocks and ice – creating a very dynamic cluster of buildings and functions.
I for one, envisioned hiking into the lodge (for fine dining and conversations with kindred spirits), then warming up in a sauna before roughing it in one of the remote cabins!
